4 Essential Things You Can Do Today to Significantly Improve Your Oral Health

If you think you’re safe from the perils of tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer because you brush and floss regularly, you might want to sit down for a while and reconsider your habits. Here at our Maryland dental practice, we often received comments from first-time visitors about how baffled they are about having oral health problems (gum disease, tooth loss, the need for fillings) when they think they’re actually doing an excellent job with their oral health.

The College Park Dental team recommends the following steps to ensuring excellent oral health on your end:

1. Do not overbrush. So you brush your teeth regularly? Yet you might be over brushing which is actually detrimental to your teeth and gums such as the occurrence of tooth sensitivity and appearance of receding gums.

2. Speaking of brushing, brush not just for 30 seconds but for 2 minutes. Here’s a research abstract which showed that most adults actually brush their teeth on an average of 30 seconds. Yikes! Lastly, don’t forget to brush the sides of your teeth!

3. Go slow on the late night cookies or mid-afternoon pastries. While not all bacteria are bad for you, there’s a good chance that an imbalance of the good and bad bacteria population can result with a diet high in processed sugar. Sugar are your bacteria’s best friend, particularly those that reside in between your teeth. Frequent snacking on sweets may just be the recipe to a looming oral health disaster.

4. Get in touch with us regularly even though you think there is nothing wrong with your oral health.

Do not wait until you’ve got a debilitating toothache or chronic, bleeding gums before you visit us. In fact, dentists are also disease-detectives as your oral health can say a lot about your overall health.
